3d Printing The Lava Baron

The Lava baron 3d print by Wayne Robson and Glen Southern

The lava baron 3d print by glen southern and wayne robson

Above you can see a 3d print I had done of a character Glen Southern and myself are responsible for.  Glen designed the orginal and did the polywork and I handled the sculpting.   This isn’t the ‘in game version ‘from The Salvation Prophecy but a little mess around I had after that was handed in.  This 3d print didn’t cost me one penny…not a cent…. it was done by a company called Kennier Dufort partly as a test of how their brand spanking new 3d print machines handled heavy polygon counts and organics such as we do in the digital sculpting world.

Turntable of high res mesh

As a rule they don’t print out the sort of stuff we do, but rather the medical and engineering side of things.  Sadly as the polycount was too high for their poor machines to load I had to settle for a level 4 version of the mesh (about 167 thousand polys) as opposed to the level 8 version.  Thats a bit sad as their machine could easily have printed out that detail.

Above I’ve added  videos, one is simply the actual 3d print while the other is a explanaiton about the 3d print process and a few hints and tips etc…  Hopefully they will be of some use to people.

Well there’s a fair old whack of stuff in this blog post as you’ll notice….  Next up is a couple of short video tutorials I did a night or two back on high frequency skin detailing in ZBrush.   They are encoded as windows media format (although there are versions on youtube as well for those unable to play WMV files.)

Video Tutortial: High frequency skin detailing and sculpting in ZBrush.

I’ll VERY SOON be removing the old video freebies from this site, so catch them while you can before I add the new ones/.  the reason is that the old ones no longer are indicative of the way I work these days or the quality of it, so they have to go to make way for newer and shinier ones.

Tomorrow I’ll up some info and a short video on 3d printing along with a one I had done a short while back with some tips and do’s and don’ts, mainly as this post is already long enough lol.  Below is a taster of the model I used, poly and design work by Glen Southern, sculpting etc by myself.

Spherehead doodle

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

I had a idea for a crature last night so wanted to quickly get the idea for the head down before I forgot it.  There’s a bit of goat and a bit of sheep in there and a nicron of bulll… so my son calls it a ‘beep’.  once I have time I’ll complete this and eventualy move onto the rest of it.

Doctor who christopher eccleston

I’v been busy on a animation and some product shots for a major toy company recently, so haven’t had a whole lot of time for any personal stuff.  (Well any actually).  So here’s a very quick doodle of Chris Eccleston who played the 9th doctor in Doctor Who.

If I have time I’ll finish it.

Spawn - Work in progress start

spawn1-sm.jpg

I’ve been promissing Slen Southern for ages that I’d get started on the spawn sculpt based on photos of a sculpture he has in his collection.  So I made a start tonight on it..finally….   Its only the inital stages and I only added the texture colors as a stand in right now.  I wont be keeping too close to the reference and I do want to change and tweak a few things to makea it ‘my own’.

Ther’s not alot else to say about it now as its very early on.  (Its of ‘hellspawn’ from the comics by the way for those unfamiliar with spawn in its many incarnations.)

My youtube page for those not aware of it

A few things get coverd in this one from a discussion about arrogance in 3d, to an appeal for ideas for a new name to use instead of ‘Waynecasts’.   (I’m getting sick of the name and need something better.) Also I ask the question why do I and other 3d artists upgrade their PC’s as much?  Plus other stuff as usual.

The Leech - final

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Well I’m going to call this one done as I’ve managed to max out my machine and if I so much as touch the model in 3d max’s viewport it crashes to a hard reboot.  So although there are a few tweaks I’d like to do I’ve got to call this one done now.   I’m still proud of it however especialy the lighting which was done ‘the old fashioned way’ without benefit of hdri or final gather etc.

The material is a simple blinn shader with just a normal map, a colourt map and a specular map. So no Subsurface shaders etc…. just a simple material and some maps and a few lights.
